Kristen   has always enjoyed raising vegetables in her family’s garden.  When she was 10 years old, she knew she had   produced more than her family needed, and gave the excess to a local food   pantry.  She did this in spite of the   cruel teasing from her older brother, who had been in and out of prison.  He did not understand why she would do this   for others.Kristen’s   experience with her brother inspired her to take action.  She wondered how she might help others   understand the importance of giving.    Thus, Kristen was inspired to begin a program in the youth detention   facilities. She   taught juvenile inmates gardening and life skills.  The inmates developed pride in their work,   and a new attitude with the knowledge that they were capable of producing   food for the hungry.  Her program has   spread throughout the country.  Today,   this program continues to grow, and the gardens have produces thousands of   pounds of produce for those who need it most.

  •   How   might the outcome of the story have been different, had Kristen let you   brother’s teasing discourage her?
  •   What   leadership qualities, along with action, do you believe Kristen used to   achieve success?
